The Bundeswehr has begun the transfer of Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems to Poland. Monday, January 23, according to Deutschlandfunk.
Therefore, two of the three complexes previously promised to Poland will be withdrawn from Gneuen in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. After that, they will be positioned near the city of Zamosc in southeastern Poland, about 60 km from the Ukrainian border and about 110 km from Lvov.
Why is Germany transferring Patriot air defense systems to Poland?
According to journalists, the purpose of the transfer, according to the Bundeswehr, is to help protect Polish airspace and strengthen NATO’s eastern flank.
Also, Welt TV’s broadcast on 23 January reported that the German army has been in Poland since 16 January to ensure the installation of weapon system components together with Polish partners in the Alliance. The units are integrated into the NATO airspace protection system on the eastern flank.
Journalists note that near the Patriot air defense system in Poland is an important railway junction for Ukraine, where military and civilian objects are loaded.
The Patriot battery consists of a fire control vehicle, a surveillance and fire control radar, power generators and an air defense launch vehicle that can be equipped with 4 to 16 missiles.
Recall, on January 20, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced that Kiev will receive a “spring package” of 1 billion euros. The package will include Patriot air defense systems, Marder infantry fighting vehicles and Gepard self-propelled guns, among other things.
Earlier on January 17, during a visit to US President Joe Biden, Prime Minister Mark Rutte said that the Netherlands plans to send Patriot systems to Ukraine together with the US and Germany.
