Two sisters managed to get out of a car that dived into a lake in western Michigan, and then, Wet, shivering and barefoot, they went for help, authorities said..
According to authorities, the girls, aged 8 and 10, got out of the back of the car, made their way to the shore and they spent the night alone for several hours before finding someone nearby at a house in Park Township.
At that timehis 52-year-old father, who was driving the car, was found dead when divers found the car on Sunday at Makatawa Lake. This was reported at the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.
According to Lieutenant Sheriff Eric Westvir, the girls stayed on someone’s porch and waited for dawn.
“They said they just got together for the night and kept warm until they could find a house that had people in it,” Westwear said.
The sheriff’s office identified the father as John Dowler of Otsego.
The girls were taken to the hospital for observation. Westwear said it was not clear how the car’s rear hatch was opened to allow them to escape.
“Divine intervention,” he added.”or it could be as simple as dad pushing a button.”
The crash is still under investigation, although Westwear said it was an accident.
“We believe that the father lost his bearings, did not know the area, which ended up in the water precisely because of the way this road was built,” the lieutenant said.
