Florida authorities found a newborn girl wrapped in a blanket and still attached to the placenta. on a hill outside the Polk County trailer park when the temperature was -50 (11 degrees Celsius).
Deputies, answering a call about a crying baby near Mulberry, east of Tampa, found the girl about an hour after she was born, the sheriff’s office said.
According to the sheriff’s office, Polk County medical officials took the baby to the hospital, where she was healthy and stable.
“By the grace of God, we found the abandoned girl in time, before exposure to cold or any animals could harm her. She was left in a very vulnerable state, but she is a strong girl and seems to be doing well.Sheriff Grady Judd said.
The agents used the K-9, a drone, and a bloodhound to try and find the mother, but were unsuccessful.
Florida has a safe haven law that allows parents to leave newborns at the fire station or medical center for up to a week after birth.
Also, this case comes just two weeks after Safe Haven Baby Boxes (SHBB), a safe deposit box for abandoned children, was first used in Ocala, Florida, two years after it was installed.
A device that legally allows a mother in a crisis to safely, securely and anonymously give birth to a newborn who cannot be cared for was installed in December 2020.
