‘Peace hopes dwindling’: UN Secretary-General says greater threat of war (video)

According to António Guterres, the risk of climbing and bloodshed is increasing day by day in the world. He urged states to abandon the use of nuclear weapons.

The escalation threat is growing around the world, and the war on the territory of Ukraine could spread beyond the country’s borders to other regions. This was announced by UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Monday (February 6th) as part of his speech to the organization’s parliament.

In particular, he commented, “The hopes for peace are constantly dwindling. The possibility of further escalation and bloodshed continues to increase.”

Guterres also stressed that the world is moving towards a bigger war.

The UN Secretary-General said, “I’m afraid the world is not moving towards a bigger war. I’m afraid he is doing it with his eyes open.”

Talking about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Guterres reminded him of the so-called “Doomsday Clock”, which shows how close humanity is to the apocalypse.

“[Ученые] studied the state of the world – the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the widespread climate catastrophe, the growing nuclear threats, the erosion of global norms and institutions. And they came to a clear conclusion. “The Doomsday Clock is now 90 seconds to midnight – a complete global catastrophe,” Guterres said.

According to him, this is the closest hour mark ever to Armageddon.

“This is even closer than the peak of the Cold War,” he added.

He added that the world needs peace in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.

“We must work harder for peace across the planet,” said the Secretary-General.

Guterres also touched on other threats to peace, including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the situation in Afghanistan, Myanmar and Haiti.

Listing the priorities for the current year, the Secretary General emphasized that states should be the first to abandon the use of nuclear weapons, and ultimately should generally abandon the use of such weapons.

Remember, Ukraine’s Ambassador to Turkey, Vasily Bodnar, had previously said that on February 24, the anniversary of Russia’s invasion, a “peace summit” should be held at the UN headquarters in New York, initiated by Kiev.

At the G20 meeting in November 2022, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky proposed Ukraine’s “peace formula” to G20 participants.
