Berlin is exploring options to confiscate Russia’s frozen state funds in favor of Ukraine. About it in an interview “Izvestia” said Russian Ambassador to Berlin Sergei Nechaev.
“Disputes on this score, if any, are only about how to legally justify the plans for confiscation and give them a plausible form. But our counterparties should not be deceived. Such a step will be fatal in terms of the attractiveness of German jurisdiction for foreign capital, and will also entail behind us our reciprocal steps”the diplomat said.
He also noted that the property of a number of leading domestic energy companies in Germany has already been seized. According to him, Germany is hunting for the property and assets of Russian businessmen on the sanctions list.
The European Union froze the assets of the Central Bank of Russia in the amount of 300 billion euros and assets worth about 19 billion euros belonging to Russian businessmen. So far, no legal ways have been found to confiscate assets in the EU countries.
Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has repeatedly stressed that Brussels is exploring the possibility of using Russian state assets to rebuild Ukraine in cooperation with its partners.
