Federal scientists are preparing to test the first avian flu vaccine in years on poultry, Biden administration officials say. they have now begun to weigh in on an unprecedented change in strategy to counter the growing outbreak.
The move comes amid growing concern about the threat posed by the continued spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza. in recent years it has devastated flocks of wild and game birds across the continent.
To date, the outbreak has killed a record 58 million birds, mostly from commercial farms., according to figures calculated by the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, either from the virus itself or one that was culled in an attempt to nullify its transmission. All states have reported spread of the virus in wild birds and 47 in poultry.
“The decision to administer vaccination is complex and there are many factors to consider before implementing a vaccination strategy.USDA spokesman Mike Stepien said, adding that the inspection service is discussing options and is “seeking the views of many stakeholders in the industry.”
While the Biden administration has yet to green-light the use of highly pathogenic avian flu vaccines, several injections have been licensed for potential use in past outbreaks. Poultry is already regularly vaccinated against other diseases, such as infectious bronchitis.
Although it can take years to license animal vaccines, Stepien said some steps in the process can be expedited in an emergency.
