Poland’s attitude towards refugees from Ukraine is changing – opinion poll

Analysts discovered that within 6 months in Poland, people noticed a negative change due to the economy, the impact on the labor market and a different cultural issue. At the same time, almost half of those surveyed are in favor of additional assistance.

Soon, a year will pass since the start of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine. Now the attitude of Poles towards Ukrainian refugees began to worsen. Reported by Rzeczpospolita.

Analysts from the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Warsaw and the University of Economics and Humanities in Warsaw conducted a social survey on Poles’ attitudes towards refugees from Ukraine. This is the second comparison since the beginning of the great war and it gives you some perspective on the issue.

The survey was conducted among residents aged 16-65.

“We have identified a new phenomenon – the effect that we call the mismatch of positive attitudes. The results of our public opinion polls show that the positive attitude of Poles towards Ukrainians and the assistance given to them, primarily military, has practically not changed. But to the additional question: “Is your attitude towards refugees from Ukraine changed in the last 6 months? unchanged, that is. University of Warsaw Dr. Robert Staniszewski, since June 2022?” A quarter of the respondents answered “yes”.

Also, 68% said the direction of change was negative. More research is needed to understand the phenomenon. In addition, Poles themselves note the negative impact on the labor market, economy and crime due to refugees. At the same time, the issue of culture and a legitimate attitude towards Ukrainians is increasingly being raised.

However, 48% of respondents believe that Poland should provide additional military support, with around 30% opposed.

Support for the provision of social assistance to refugees decreased by 4 percent:

  • 49% favor a one-time additional payment of 300 PLN.
  • 62% support free medical care
  • 87% favor the admission of Ukrainian children to Polish schools
  • 36% (+16% per year) oppose housing finance for Ukrainians

Miroslav Skurka, head of the Union of Ukrainians in Poland, explains the unfolding moments with many Ukrainians in Poland speaking Russian, which is still an “enemy language”. And a different culture is the remnant of the “Russian world” – arrogance, snobbery and passion for expensive cars.

Recall, on January 18 it was reported that Ukrainians in Poland will receive new financial assistance up to 18,000 hryvnia. It is designed primarily for the least socially protected categories of people.

On January 3, the media wrote that support for Ukrainian refugees in Europe will decline in 2023 for economic reasons.
