The Mexican army paid tribute to the puppy “Proteo”, who died during the rescue work in Turkey.

With “Mission Accomplished” at the Santa Lucia military base near the new Felipe Angeles International Airport, The remains of a puppy named “Proteo” who died in Turkey while he was involved in rescue efforts in a 7.1 magnitude earthquake have arrived in Mexico.

Accompanied by dozens of soldiers and personnel from the Mexican National Guard and Navy, the remains of the dog were placed to receive the highest honors from military leaders.

Although there have been speculations about collapse as the cause of death, the Mexican army announced that he actually died due to his advanced age and extreme temperatures. which he encountered while in Turkey.

As it turned out, “Proteo” was part of the rescue squad of the Mexican army, so he was recognized as a soldier. Among his accomplishments as a rescuer, he found 7 people alive and managed to find 12 bodies.

His career has included work on the 2015 Guatemala landslide, the 2016 Ecuador earthquake, the 2017 Mexico earthquake, the 2022 Hurricane Agatha and the Turkey earthquake.this year.

Juan Carlos Villeda Marquez, Proteo’s guide, in an emotional farewell message to the rescue dog, mentioned: “Proteo: an unattainable companion. Today we say goodbye and thank you for your commendable service in the service of this armed institute, in which you served with courage and devotion for more than nine years that I worked alongside you, getting to know our Mexico and other countries.

“I can only thank you for bringing me. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to come with me. Someday we’ll meet again… Your barking has stopped, I won’t listen to it anymore,” he concluded in a broken voice..
