In Moldova, the police detained about a thousand people on their way to an opposition protest in Chisinau, said Marina Tauber, vice chairman of the Shor party organizing the rally.
“The police detained about a thousand of our supporters near Cimislia, who were traveling by bus and car to Chisinau to participate in the protest, they are also detained in other places at the entrance to the capital,” told she is TASS.
The rally in Chisinau on February 19 was organized by the Movement for the People coalition, which was founded by deputies of the opposition Shor party together with several extra-parliamentary parties and public figures. The protesters demand that the Moldovan government pay bills for gas, electricity and heating from all citizens of the country for the whole winter. There are also slogans about the dissolution of parliament and the holding of early elections.
“We have the largest accounts in Moldova. We have the highest inflation rate in Europe. The government does not help us, Maia Sandu is constantly abroad. We will defend our rights,” Interfax quotes Tauber’s speech to the protesters.
The head of Shor also said that the Moldovan authorities launched disinformation about allegedly preparing attempts to seize the parliament or government buildings. However, according to her, the protest is peaceful and the protesters have no such plans.
However, in order to avoid provocations, the column had to change its route, and instead of the square in front of the parliament, the protesters headed for the square near the Opera House.
On February 10, the entire government of Moldova resigned in connection with the departure from the post of prime minister of the country. However, Moldovan President Maia Sandu said that this did not lead to instability in the country.
