All possible sanctions that the European Union could take against Russia have already been introduced, so there is not much to add to them. Such a statement did European Council President Charles Michel in an interview with the Belgian edition of LeSoir.

“The main thing has already been done, because we have imposed sanctions on fossil fuels. When you have already taken the main measures, there are not many additional things that you can do”Michel said.

He also added that each new package of sanctions is aimed only at “tightening the loop” and preventing attempts to bypass the restrictions.

After the start of Russia’s special operation, Western countries imposed serious sanctions on Moscow, among which was the freezing of $300 billion in international foreign exchange reserves.

The West also disconnected a number of Russian banks from the SWIFT system, in response, Moscow demanded that unfriendly countries pay for gas and oil in rubles. Later, the West also imposed a price ceiling on Russian oil.

The head of the European Commission von der Leyen on January 17 announced the tenth package of sanctions against Russia. She clarified that the next set of restrictions is intended to “close loopholes” in the already introduced restrictions. It is also planned that it will provide for the consequences in the event of a bypass.

On January 24, the Financial Times noted that the introduction by the West of a price ceiling for Russian oil products will hit the economies of the EU countries more than the maximum oil price adopted in December 2022.

On February 4, the European Union extended the sanctions by extending the price ceiling for petroleum products. Hungarian experts noted that such a step would only exacerbate problems in Europe’s energy security.

On February 14, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the Russian Federation was calmly enduring Western sanctions. The head of state stressed that Russia lives under constant pressure from foreign countries that introduce endless restrictions.
