Brain surgery has been a medical procedure for the rich and famous for over 3,500 years.

New archaeological discoveries show that brain surgery could be a medical procedure that the rich and famous had access to in the Middle East over 3500 years ago

Archaeologists from Brown University found evidence a surgical procedure called trepanation on the territory of modern Israel around 1500 BC

Burr drilling, or burr drilling, involves drilling a hole in the skull. Previously carried out in order to eradicate diseases considered to be of cerebral origin.

Archaeologists know that people practiced craniotomy. a medical procedure that involves making a hole in the skull for thousands of years. They found evidence that ancient civilizations around the world, from South America to Africa and beyond, performed this operation.

Now, thanks to recent excavations in ancient city of Megiddo, Israelthere is new evidence that a special kind of trepanation it dates back at least to the Late Bronze Age.

Rachel Kalisher, Ph.D. candidate of the Zhukovsky Institute of Archeology and Ancient World at Brown University, analyzed unearthed the remains of two brothers from the upper class, who lived in Megiddo around the 15th century BC, he discovered that, shortly before the death of one of his brothers, he had undergone a special type of cranial surgery called an angular notch.

The procedure to which one of the two found brothers was subjected consists of scalpinguse a sharp bevelled tool to cut four intersecting lines on the skull and use a pry bar to make a square hole.

elite members

According to Kalisher, the two brothers whose bones he analyzed they came from the residential area immediately adjacent to the palace from the Late Bronze Age of Megiddo, suggesting that the couple were elite members of society and perhaps even members of the royal family. This is confirmed by many other facts: the brothers were buried with fine Cypriot pottery and other valuables, and, as trepanation showed, they were treated in a way that was probably not available to most of the inhabitants of Megiddo.

“These brothers obviously lived in some pretty dire pathological circumstances that would have been hard to bear without wealth and status at the time,” Kalisher said. “If you are an elite, you may not need to work so hard. If you are an elite, you may be able to follow a special diet. If you belong to the elite, you will be able to survive a serious illness longer because you have access to medical care.”
