“We’re not there yet”: EU can guarantee Ukraine security only in peacetime – Scholz

According to the German chancellor, Germany, along with other European partners, gave Kiev the opportunity to join the European Union. However, for this, Ukraine must meet the requirements set for candidates.

The European Union is ready to provide security guarantees for Ukraine, but only after peace begins. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in an interview with American political scientist and journalist Farid Zakaria on CNN on Sunday (March 5th).

In particular, the German Chancellor emphasized that Germany, together with other European partners, supports Ukraine in its application for EU membership.

“We told them [Украине]They said they could apply for membership in the European Union,” he said.

He also added that Kiev is currently working to “make progress” on all aspects necessary for the country’s EU integration process.

Also, the German politician noted that the European states are ready to issue certain security guarantees for Ukraine after the start of peace.

“I think they [украинцы] Know that when peacetime comes, we are ready to arrange a certain way to guarantee the security of the country. But we’re not there yet,” said the Chancellor.

Recall that in the same interview Scholz said that Germany is no longer dependent on Russian oil and gas. According to the Federal Chancellor of Germany, the refusal of energy supply from the Russian Federation did not lead to the economic crisis foreseen for the country in the winter.

On March 3, the German Chancellor flew to the United States to meet with US President Joe Biden. The main topic of discussion between the leaders of the two countries is the discussion of additional military cooperation with Ukraine, which is preparing for a large-scale offensive by the Russian Armed Forces.
