Biden administration says it’s redundant to label cartels as terrorist groups

In response to pressure from some Republican congressmen, President Joe Biden’s government deems it redundant to refer to drug cartels in Mexico as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs), noting that current actions are countering these criminal groups.

“Designing these cartels as FTO will not give us any additional powers that we do not have at the moment,” spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said.

He added that these criminal organizations, also known as TOC, face various programs against them, including economic sanctions against their families and companies.

“The United States has powerful sanctions agencies specifically designed to deal with drug trafficking organizations and the individuals and entities that assist them,” the spokeswoman said. “So we weren’t afraid to use them.”

He added that in recent months, US authorities have announced actions against cartels that pose a “danger to public safety.”

We have also taken steps to enable [Departamento del] The Finance Ministry is imposing sanctions against foreigners,” he said.

He explained that there are foreign companies or people who know that the money they receive comes from the proceeds of the drug trade, for which they are subject to sanctions.

“This means that drug dealers can no longer use family or friends to hide their assets from the United States government,” he stressed.

He insisted that naming the cartels FTO would not help fight drug trafficking.

“Again, we don’t think this gives us any additional powers,” he said.
