The parliamentary majority hopes to return to the legislative initiative once the “emotional background” in the country has subsided. Lawmakers are confident that they can “explain” to the public why such a law is needed in Georgia.
The ruling party “Georgian Dream” and the popular movement “People Power” decided to withdraw from the Georgian Parliament the bill on “foreign agents”, which was accepted at the first reading after mass protests in the country. They issued a joint statement to that effect on Thursday, March 9th.
“We inform you that consultations are taking place between the Georgian Dream political council, the People’s Forces and the deputies of the parliamentary majority on the ongoing political processes around the law on transparency of foreign influence,” the statement said.
The text states that the initiators decided to withdraw their legislative initiative “without any conditions” because they were “a responsible governing power”.
The majority of the parliament said, “We see that the bill that has been passed has caused controversy in the society. The polygraph has succeeded in presenting the bill in a negative way and mislead a certain part of the population.”
It is alleged that the label “Russian law” was deliberately put into the bill, although according to the ruling parties, it is not so according to the initiators.
“The adoption at first reading was presented as a departure from the European path in the eyes of a segment of society,” the statement said.
The document states that after the “emotional background has subsided”, the ruling political force intends to explain to the public why the country needs a “foreign agents” law. For this, they plan to hold private meetings with people.
It should be recalled that on March 7, the Georgian Parliament passed the “foreign agents” bill at the first reading. In Tbilisi, people joined mass protests.
Protests continued in Tbilisi on the night of 8-9 March. More than 15,000 people took to the streets in the Georgian capital. Pressurized water was used again against the protesters. Around 22:00 Kiev time, the security forces managed to surround the activists at the rally. In some places, demonstrators set up barricades consisting of benches and trash cans.
