Casey James Fury, a 25-year-old shipyard worker, set fire to rags on a nuclear submarine for which the court sentenced him to 17 years in federal prison. The fire turned the ship into a hot furnace, 7 people were injured. Damage is estimated at $700 million.
In 2013, a fire broke out on the USS Miami, which was moored in Kittery, Maine. Casey James Fury, working as a ship painter, started the fire because he wanted to get home early. Reported by Ladbible.
At the time, the USS Miami was going through a major refurbishment and additional workers were hired to assist with the 20-month project.
However, it was later revealed that one of these workers, 25-year-old Fury, caused the fire, which lasted more than 12 hours and injured seven people. A man set fire to a bag of rags found on a warship in the headquarters building.
US officials initially believed that the fire was started by an industrial vacuum cleaner and that personnel had accidentally ignited the debris inside. However, Fury accepted the deed himself and said he wanted to finish the job sooner. He also told authorities he was having bouts of anxiety.
After escaping the scene, the fire spread rapidly, causing significant damage to the living rooms, control center and torpedo room of the nuclear submarine.
A fire crew managed to localize the fire and prevent it from entering the stern of the submarine, where the nuclear power plant components were stored.
Then, about three weeks later, Fury started a smaller fire as he wanted to go home again. Fortunately, this fire did not cause much damage.
Fury later pleaded guilty to two counts of arson and was ordered to pay more than $400 million in damages before being sentenced to 17 years in prison.
As the man served his sentence, he said, “From the bottom of my heart, I sincerely regret what I did. I had no intention of hurting anyone. I regret not being able to find appropriate help to solve my problems before all this happened.”
However, this did little to console its victims. Firefighter Eric Hardy later told the press that he woke up in pain every day after the 12-hour fire.
As for the USS Miami, the ship was originally scheduled to be repaired, but was later decommissioned due to damage during a fire.
