The Russians want to launch a supercomputer into space: why did they need it?

In addition to the supercomputer, they will place data centers in orbit, although the costs and benefits have not yet been calculated and the timing of the project has not been named.

MSTU im. Bauman is working on a project to put supercomputers and data centers in Earth orbit, Izvestia reports. In the case of a successful launch, they will immediately arrange a kind of “space cloud” among themselves and will be able to exchange data.

The Russians argue that supercomputers and data centers in orbit will have a beneficial effect on the ecology of the planet because they consume a lot of energy for operation and cooling and generate huge amounts of heat. And if you launch them into space, you don’t need to cool them, and quantum computers often need low temperatures for efficient operation, so ideal conditions develop for them in a cold orbit.

The scientists plan to power this entire complex structure using solar energy by placing solar panels at the stations. The information will be transmitted via satellite. According to Professor Georgy Shcheglov, the most ideal spot to place supercomputers and data centers is Lagrange point L1. At this point the Sun is always within sight of the solar panels, and at this point the nearly equal gravity between the Earth and the Sun will save energy to keep the station in orbit.

Critics of the project argue that the idea is not economically viable, as the cost of simply launching such structures into orbit would far outweigh the potential profits from them. In addition, terrestrial vehicles operate in orbit for an average of five years and must be constantly repaired or replaced with analogues. But this could be an excellent PR move as another demonstration of “Russia’s greatness”. Scientists have not yet fully calculated the costs and benefits of their projects, but they say that their opinion will be justified by considering the benefits to the environment.
