Protesters in the Georgian capital are rapidly changing slogans. After the authorities withdrew the bill on foreign influence, the opposition demanded the release of all those detained. But when this was done, the crowd made new and truly radical demands. Details are in the story. REN TV.
Switched to the language of the ultimatum
On the night of March 10, thousands of people took to the streets of Tbilisi again, despite the ruling party’s promise not to adopt the scandalous law on foreign agents and the president’s promise to veto it. The activists demanded the release of all the detainees – and there were 130 such people in a few days of protests.
At some point, the protesters switched to the language of an ultimatum and demanded the resignation of the government, and an immediate one, as well as calling new elections and urgently resolving the Abkhaz issue with the use of force. The real militants shouted the loudest – those who had recently committed war crimes in Ukraine, and now returned to their homeland. Thus, the rally organizers are raising the stakes. This time, almost 30 thousand people managed to gather on the square.
Organized actions and provocations
According to experts, if the actions of the crowd in the first days looked chaotic, now organized actions are already visible, there are even attempts at provocations.
“The situation that we see in Tbilisi is practically no different from the one that was on the Maidan in 2014. If someone thinks that this is some kind of spontaneous action, then this is absolutely not the case. There are people who live on handout, they are paid for. Naturally, for this money they are ready to go to any provocations”– says the honorary president of the International Association of Veterans of the Alpha Special Unit Sergey Goncharov.
New point of tension
It seems that they were carefully preparing for the aggravation of the situation, waiting for the moment. Interest in the protests was fueled among students: according to some reports, they were promised grants and visas to the EU and the USA for their active participation. A new point of tension in the post-Soviet space will be very useful for Washington.
“This is a rifle in the hands of larger figures who would like to remove the Georgian Dream party for its relative loyalty. This is not a pro-Russian party, it is pro-Georgian, but it still assumes loyal relations with Russia, which does not suit ultra-Westerners at all”– Dmitry Zhuravlev, director of the Institute of Regional Problems, explained.
The unrest of the last days will definitely be used by the parties concerned for their own purposes. It is impossible to predict how events will develop further. However, in a few hours, the protesters will again come to the parliament building, where the plenary session is to be held. At it, the deputies promised to formally withdraw the scandalous bill.
