Maternal mortality increased significantly in the US in 2021, amid an upward trend in the country. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
According to reliable data, more than 1,200 American women died in 2021 while pregnant or shortly after giving birth, while there were 733 maternal deaths in 2022, according to the agency’s preliminary figures, though the final figure is likely higher.
Data from the U.S. National Vital Statistics System showed that the maternal mortality rate in the country in 2021, when the most recent and complete data is available, was 32.9 deaths per 100,000 live births.compared to 20.1 in 2019 and 23.8 in 2020.
Officials say the maternal mortality rate in 2022 is approaching pre-pandemic levels.
The CDC counts women who die during pregnancy, during childbirth, and within 42 days of childbirth. The main causes are excessive bleeding, blockage of blood vessels, and infections.
Black women had more than twice as many deaths as white women, at a rate of about 70 deaths per 100,000 live births. which is 2.6 times higher than that of white women, 26.6 per 100,000 people.
The increase from 2020 to 2021 for Hispanic groups was also significant, from 18.2 to 28 deaths per 100,000 live births.
Experts attribute this increase to the pandemic, which has exacerbated the maternal mortality crisis in the United States, according to CNN.
