officers Customs and Border Protection (CBP)stationed at the Port of Cincinnati announced that they seized four gold barsas well as a box with a scattering of gold, hidden inside a bag of clothes.
According to officials, The outgoing shipment was claimed to be $125 worth of clothing.but then they discovered that in addition to clothing there was also placer gold.
“Officers selected a batch for x-ray examination when conducting routine inspections of cargo exported from the United States to international destinations,” CBP said in a statement.
The package, according to the authorities, came from an apartment in San Francisco, California, and headed to an address in Kowloon, Hong Kong.
The discovery forced the officers to seek help from CBP Laboratories and Scientific Services (LSS)the agency sent scientists trained in chemistry, nuclear physics, palynology and engineering to analyze the gold in the shipment.
LSS confirmed that the gold was about 98% pure, prompting importers from the Centers of Excellence and Experience to estimate the cost of the lot at $67,830.
“Our employees handle millions of legitimate commercial imports and exports every year at the Port of Cincinnati. While they protect the United States economy by promoting legal trade and investment, officials also protect the income of the country and its citizens from individuals and legal entities who are trying to evade import and export requirements,” said Port of Cincinnati director Richard Gillespie.
CBP emphasized the responsibility that falls on its agency and assured that they will see to it that all goods brought in and taken out of the country are made in accordance with all laws. and applicable U.S. regulations, they also encouraged exporters to file electronically through the CBP Automated Export System if the value of their goods exceeds $2,500,000.
