Members of Latvia’s ruling party, the National Association, have proposed banning Russian subtitles for films. The relevant bill was submitted to the Seimas.
From the annotation it follows that Russian-language subtitles “undermine the creation of a single society” because “they create the illusion of belonging to the Russian world.”
“The practice of Russian subtitles not only does not stimulate the study of the Latvian language, but also creates the illusion that Latvia is part of the so-called Russian world, where public information should also be provided in Russian”says in text.
Earlier, Russian dubbing of films was banned in Latvia. Also, an inscription in Russian was removed from the Riga station.
Recall, according to statistics, up to 40% of the population of the republic speaks Russian. However, this language has the status of a foreign language.
The leadership of the Russian Federation has repeatedly pointed to Russophobia and hatred, which are planted in the Baltic countries. So, in the summer of 2022, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, drew attention to the “animal xenophobia” of the Latvian establishment.
