According to the editor-in-chief of “Euroradio” Pavel Sverdlov, if a new leader is elected in Minsk and the politician does not have time to hide in Rostov on the conditional, Lukashenka will be tried according to the rules adopted by him.
A well-known journalist in Belarus said that Alexander Lukashenko signed the law on the death penalty for treason only for himself. Pavel Sverdlov, Euroradio’s editor-in-chief, said this in an interview with Radio NV on March 23.
“We believe that Lukashenka signed the law for himself. Because if changes occur and he somehow does not have time to hide in a new Rostov-on-Don or in the real Rostov-on-Don … Then, Naturally, he will commit treason and He will be tried for everything he has done in power for nearly 30 years,” he said.
At the same time, Pavel Sverdlov notes that if a new democratic government comes to Belarus, then Alexander Lukashenko will not be executed, since one of the first decisions of the successor will be a moratorium on the death penalty.
In the case of the passed law, there is also the flip side of the coin: “This law can of course be directed at those who have committed crimes against human rights in Belarus in recent years,” he said.
The death penalty in Belarus: what is known
On March 9 this year, Alexander Lukashenko signed a law on the death penalty for treason. This will affect, first of all, the officials and military personnel of Belarus. As noted in the press service of the head of state, such actions are aimed at stopping extremist and anti-state activities.
On February 21, it was reported that the House of Representatives of Belarus introduced the death penalty to the military for treason. Legislative changes are being made “to contain the subversive elements and to demonstrate a determined struggle against treason against the state.”
