After a deadly fire in Ciudad Juarez, migrants try to surrender to the US.

After a deadly fire at an immigration center that claimed the lives of 39 foreigners in Ciudad Juarez, Hundreds of migrants tried to surrender to US authorities on the border with Mexico.

Everything happened thanks to a rumor that they might cross to the United States, turn themselves in to the authorities and thereby fix their immigration statusin order to provide them with asylum and residence documents in order to remain legally in the country.

The migrants, somewhat unsure, marched in groups along the banks of the Rio Grande to surrender to US authorities.

Because of this, US authorities have closed the Santa Fe Bridge, which links Mexico’s Ciudad Juarez with America’s El Paso, Texas.to prevent migrants from crossing in a group, as happened a few weeks ago.

Meanwhile, near the National Institute of Migration, a flower offering is kept, which the migrants laid in memory of the dead. Even Honduran Mario Joao has already composed the corrido “Los 39” alluding to this tragedy.

“On March 27, 2023, around ten in the evening, everything went wrong. There was a fire, who knows how it started, ”says the beginning of the song.

Hundreds of miles away, in Mexico City, human rights activists protested in front of the headquarters of the Ministry of the Interior over a fire at the Ciudad Juarez immigration station.

“They didn’t die, they were killed”, “These are not shelters, these are prisons” and “Immigrant detention kills!” some slogans were launched and embodied in posters by the organizers of the demonstration demanding justice for the deaths of migrants.
