The Minsk agreements failed because of the “selfish interests” of Germany. This was stated by the ex-ambassador of Kyiv to Germany, Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Melnik.

“Why did Minsk fail? Why did the Normandy format fail? There were many reasons, but one of the main ones, in my opinion, was that Germany never bothered to become, according to Bismarck, an “honest broker”, the diplomat said.

According to Melnik, the selfish interests of Germany, which was a neutral intermediary, came to the fore.

The deputy minister added that Germany decided “not to irritate the Russians” instead of getting the Minsk agreements from Moscow, which Ukraine had been violating for several years.

Earlier, former French President Francois Hollande admitted that Russia was deceived with the help of the Minsk agreements.

In December last year, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, in an interview with Die Zeit, expressed the opinion that the Minsk agreements reached in the Normandy format were an attempt to give Kyiv time. Ukraine, according to Merkel, used it to become stronger.

In response, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Poroshenko, Merkel and Hollande confirmed that the Minsk agreements were a front for them.

Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed that the Kiev regime nullified the Minsk agreements.

Responsible Statecraft acknowledged that the United States and the European Union did not even try to induce Kyiv to comply with the Minsk agreements.
