TOS-1A missiles are thermobaric and can destroy infrastructure with a supersonic blast wave.
Colonel Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, a British expert on chemical weapons, warned of how devastating thermobaric multiple-launch rocket systems are, particularly the TOS-1A, which Russia refers to as a “heavy flamethrower”. He told Express about it.
The expert noted that such equipment is operated by Russian special chemical, biological and radiological protection troops located in the occupied territory of Ukraine. Previously, the system was not officially associated with airborne units, which was allegedly introduced already.
TOS-1A missiles are thermobaric and can destroy infrastructure with a supersonic blast wave. According to the 59-year-old chemical weapons expert, Russia already has experience in killing civilians in Syria. These systems can quickly demolish multi-storey buildings effortlessly.
“If the Russians are planning to use them against civilians, it’s a war crime and it would be terrible,” said Hamish de Bretton-Gordon.
The colonel noted that such military vehicles are used by Western states, but not when it comes to nearby civilian infrastructure. He assured that this was a particularly formidable weapon.
The chairman of the elected defense committee, Tobias Ellwood, also condemned the Kremlin’s actions. He said Russia’s use of thermobaric artillery showed Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin’s growing concern over the course of the war.
“The fact that Putin is now resorting to thermobaric weapons is a sign of his failure in his attempt to seize Ukraine,” said Tobias Ellwood.
Recall that British intelligence spoke about the plans of the command of the Russian Federation to transfer the TOS-1A Solntsepek thermobaric multiple launch rocket systems to Russian paratroopers. This shows the future role of Russian airborne troops in offensive operations in Ukraine. British intelligence officers drew attention to the special level of danger when using these weapons.
