There is no prohibition in the legislation of South Korea and the instructions of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the supply of weapons to warring countries or the provision of other military assistance to them. However, Seoul does not do this for Kyiv in order to maintain stable relations with Russia, the agency writes. Yonhap News Agency with reference to a source in the office of the President of the Republic.
“We are not doing this because, at the same time that South Korea is actively supporting the international community to protect the freedom of Ukrainian citizens, we must manage relations with Russia in a stable way.”– explained an official in the administration of the head of South Korea.
Recall that on April 19, the President of the Republic, Yun Sok-yol, said that if a situation occurs in Ukraine that “the international community cannot put up with,” it will be difficult for Seoul to insist only on humanitarian and financial assistance to Kiev. Thus, he made it clear that South Korea is ready to help Kyiv militarily. Later, the administration of the head of the country noted that the statement was “hypothetical” in nature.
Nevertheless, the Russian Foreign Ministry warned the republic against supplying weapons to Ukraine. The official representative of the department, Maria Zakharova, said that such actions by South Korea would be regarded by Russia as hostile.
