Customs and Border Protection (CBP) published its operating statistics for April 2023 on Wednesday and commented in a press release that arrests of undocumented immigrants in April on the southwestern border of the United States increased by 10% compared to March, but they registered a decline in the last days after the expiration of Section 42.
In April, border guards detained 211,401 foreigners at the border. This is 10% more than the 191,956 arrests registered in March.
More than two-thirds (67%) of all arrests at the US southwestern land border were by unaccompanied adults — 140,678, up 5% from March.
CBP noted in a press release that the rise in concerns in April is “typical.” However, The agency stressed that the number of arrests in April 2023 decreased by 11% compared to the same month in 2022.
CBP Acting Commissioner Troy A. Miller noted in a statement that in April, the agency “increased resources, technology, and personnel to safely manage” the end of Section 42, allowing for faster sanitary removals.
In April, 74,027 appointments, 35% of the total, were processed for Section 42 elimination and 137,374 migrants were expelled under Section 8.
Since May 11 last year, the number of illegal border crossings has decreased. According to what Homeland Security Deputy Minister of Border Policy and Immigration Blas Nunez-Neto said today in a telephone conversation in which he said that border authorities recorded a decrease in the number of border crossings by more than 56% since the end of last week, averaging 4,400 interceptions each day.
In fact, less than 4,000 people have been arrested daily over the past two days.
Before Section 42 ended, officers made an average of 10,000 arrests daily.
Most of the intercepted migrants came from Mexico, Colombia and Guatemala, according to data provided by CBP.
