Meta has been convicted of “continuing to transfer personal data” of users from the European Economic Area to the US.in violation of community bloc rules, the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC), which acts on behalf of the EU overseeing the application of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), explained in its decision because the European Headquarters of the US group is in Ireland.
“Unjustified and unnecessary” sanction
The decision also requires Meta to “suspend all transfers of personal data to the United States for five months” after receiving notice of the decision and comply with GDPR requirements within six months.
The fine is the result of an investigation launched in 2020.. Meta describes it as “unjustified and unnecessary” and will take action in the courts to try to have it suspended, the social media giant responded in a statement sent to news agency AFP. “Thousands of companies and organizations depend on the ability to transfer data between the EU and the US,” and “there is a fundamental legal conflict of the US government over data access and European privacy rights,” writes the California giant.
