Immigrants protest in Tijuana against possible suspension of CBP One due to lawsuits

Dozens undocumented immigrants from hostel Agape to Tijuana gathered outside the United States consulate in this Mexican city to protest a lawsuit filed by Texas to suspend use of the CBP One app, a new resource for completing procedures refuge in the United States.

The Texas Attorney General has filed a lawsuit against the Biden government to void the use of CBP One’s asylum application, saying it encourages illegal immigration.

The director of the shelter, Albert Rivera, emphasized that immigrants don’t want to stop using this app, because it will cause an increase in human and drug trafficking, an increase in the number of migrants who will die trying to cross the border, an increase in kidnapping attempts, and increased insecurity in Mexico and the United States.

“We want to enter legally”, “We want CBP-One”, were among the slogans of some 200 undocumented immigrants seeking asylum in the United States.

The application is the only option that undocumented immigrants must legally enter the United States by requesting an appointment for humanitarian asylum.

A procession of people, including families and several children of different nationalities, arrived at the US consulate area in Tijuana, which was guarded by city police, preventing them from entering the main headquarters.

Peacefully, the demonstrators took up positions in the area where Rivera Colón warned that if CBP One were to be suspended, “it could cause serious problems, such as an increase in drug and human trafficking.”

In addition, he stressed, there will be more migrants, “those who try to cross the border illegally, risking their lives, and ‘coyotes’ (traffickers) will take advantage of the situation, and we don’t want that.”

He believed that this increased the risk of more deaths, kidnappings, “it would create more insecurity for both Mexico and the United States,” Rivera said.
