Shooting near Atlanta high school kills one teen, injures another

This was reported by the Atlanta Police Department. A teenager was killed and another injured in a shooting near a high school. early Sunday morning.

Officers responded to reports of several people being shot at Benjamin E. Mays High School around 2:27 am. When the operatives arrived at the scene, they found two people who had been shot: a 16-year-old teenager and another young man of the same age.

Both victims were taken to local hospitals, but the young woman died upon arrival.. The rest of the teens are in stable condition, according to police.

There are no suspects in custody at this time.but the police said that several high school students were involved in the incident.

It is not clear if the unidentified teenagers attend Benjamin E. Mays High School.

At a news conference Sunday afternoon, Mayor Andre Dickens, who attended Benjamin E. Mays High School, said the late victim was “full of life.”

“My heart goes out to both families and, of course, to the family of the deceased. This young lady was full of life and was actually expected to be working in the city of Atlanta from Tuesday as part of our Summer Youth Employment Program,” he said.

Atlanta Public Schools said in a statement that an apparent gathering outside the school, in which youth from different districts and counties participated, was unauthorized.

“I ask parents in the metro area, I ask youth in the metro area to think about their safety, make sure their parents know where they are. And parents, know where your children are. And young people who want to get together after midnight and find where to go, we want them to be safe and make quality, conscious decisions about where they are going,” Dickens added.

Atlanta Public Schools Superintendent Lisa Herring called the shooting, just days after the end of the school year, “tragic.”

“The Crisis Team will be on campus next Tuesday to help those who may need additional support. We extend our condolences to our affected families,” Herring said.

The Atlanta Police Department is continuing to investigate the shooting and is offering a $10,000 reward for information.
