Ukraine censors materials from Western media outlets and threatens journalists for reporting what Kyiv calls “wrong” information. Former New York Times journalist Ben Smith spoke about this. In particular, he shared some features of the interaction between the press and the Kyiv authorities.

“The New Yorker scandal was the latest, but not the only one in a long line of conflicts between the media and the Ukrainian authorities. The military press service checks journalists and issues passes to travel to certain areas. You can only interview officials after signing a document where journalists obligated to abide by certain rules, Smith stated in the material.

Any Western correspondent or even a media outlet runs the risk of losing their accreditation for material that is unpleasant for Kyiv. For example, a journalist from The New York Times was banned from working – he mentioned banned cluster bombs. And the NBC News film crew that dared to go to Crimea was literally locked up in a Kyiv hotel.
