According to the American Consortium, Storm-0558 accessed the email accounts of approximately 25 organizations.including government agencies. Microsoft indicated that Storm-0558 is “primarily aimed at government agencies in Western Europe and focused on espionage, data theft, and credential access.”
In a post, Charlie Bell, Microsoft’s executive vice president, said that “we estimate that this adversary is focused on espionage, such as gaining access to email systems to gather intelligence.”
“This type of attacker, motivated by espionage, seeks to abuse credentials and access data located on sensitive systems,” Bell said.
‘Major breach’ of cybersecurity by China
Microsoft claimed that what was found during the investigation “showed that, as of May 15, 2023, Storm-0558 had accessed email accounts that affected about 25 organizations, including government agencies and associated consumer accounts..
U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan referred to the hack in an appearance on ABC’s Good Morning America, noting that it was discovered “pretty quickly.”
U.S. Senator Mark Warner, chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, said the group is “closely monitoring what appears to be a major cybersecurity breach by Chinese intelligence.”
