Mexican President Andres Manuel López Obrador thanked his American colleague Joe Biden for filing a complaint against Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, to accommodate spiked buoys in the Rio Grande.
“We are very grateful to President Biden for filing a complaint against the Governor of Texas with the Attorney’s Office, Judges for putting up these buoys, these barbed wire fences in Rio Bravo, Rio Grande, which violate our sovereignty and violate treaties of international agreements, both bilateral agreements, that is, concerning our territories, which the United States government has signed, and what has to do with international law, plus that it implies a violation of human rights, so we are very grateful that President Biden has filed this complaint,” he said.
At his morning meeting at the National Palace, Mexico’s chief executive reiterated that the attitude of the Texas governor towards the installation of these buoys was an irresponsible, vulgar act of propaganda and politicking.
“The only thing I can tell you, I repeat, we found the attitude of President Biden very respectful, different from that of the Governor of Texas, who acts irresponsibly because it is more than anything propagandistic and rude, in short, it is politicking in what he does” he repeated.
Lopez Obrador assured that the buoys installed between Eagle Pass, Texas, and Piedras Negras, in the Mexican state of Coahuila, would be counterproductive for Greg Abbott, because most Texans and Mexicans reject these measures, which are “an act of provocation in search of publicity.”
“I think it will be counterproductive, because the Texans, our brother neighbors, are not going to approve of these illegal insults., authoritarian, arrogant and inhuman, they will not have the support of either the citizens of Texas, especially Mexican Americans, or any humanitarian person who understands the reasons for migration. What’s with the barbed wire fence? Also, invade what corresponds to our territory. This is an act of provocation in search of publicity, so I’m talking about propaganda, politicking. He will not succeed, he advises very badly and, on the contrary, we see a responsible attitude on the part of President Biden, and if we want to emphasize this, because it does not make sense. We talked here, this is aggression, it’s like throwing a stone, a firecracker,” he said.
The President of Mexico insisted that the migration problem needs to be addressed more deeply, eliminating the causes that give rise to it.
“If the problem of immigration is very complex and the reasons must be eliminated, as we dothere must be cooperation for development, as there is between the United States and Mexico, and, after all, human rights must be respected. People do not leave their cities for pleasure, they do it out of necessity, and any person, President Roosevelt said, you have the right to live without suffering, we all have the right to life, the main human right is the right to life and to find work and move forward with effort, with sacrifice in an honest manner, but this has nothing to do with it, this is an act of propaganda. If I didn’t even want to deal with this, so as not to play along with this irresponsible person, but since President Biden did respond to diplomatic notes sent by Mexico on this issue, well, now we have to air it and say it, ”he concluded.
It was in May when Texas Governor Announces Orange Buoys and barbed wire in the so-called Rio Bravo, a situation that caused discontent among civic organizations in favor of the human rights of immigrants.
Given Greg Abbott’s extreme measures, the Joe Biden government filed a lawsuit against Texas this Monday, July 24, 2023, through the Department of Justice and the Attorney’s Office, alleging that this barrier violates human rights and international treaties.
