The US government has warned the North Korean government to avoid arms deals with Russia.as it may violate UN Security Council resolutions.
The position from President Joe Biden’s government comes as North Korean leader Kim Jong Un confirms a meeting with Russia’s Vladimir Putin.
“I would remind both countries that any arms transfer from North Korea to Russia will violate several UN Security Council resolutions.”said Matthew Miller, a State Department spokesman. “Of course, we aggressively enforce our sanctions against entities that fund Russia’s military efforts, and we will continue to enforce them and will not hesitate to impose new sanctions if necessary.”
He added that a possible arms deal would come as Russia faces difficulties in its military advances in Ukraine.
“Year and a half ago President Putin started a war against Ukraine with its large-scale aggression with the dream of restoring the glory of the Russian Empire. That hope, that expectation of theirs, was dashed,” Miller said. “It will continue to fail. And I think there is no better proof of this than the fact that now, a year and a half later, not only has he failed to achieve his goals on the battlefield, but we see him traveling around his country, hat in hand, to plead with Kim Jong Un for military assistance.”
Miller focused on Putin’s failed efforts in Ukraine, a country that the United States and its NATO allies have backed with short-range weapons to defend against Russian invasion.
“I think this obviously means that [Putin] has trouble maintaining the war effort and that’s why he’s seeking help from North Korea,” Miller said. “And in terms of our response, we will be watching the outcome of this meeting very closely.”
According to information from Korean and Russian agencies, as circulated by Reuters, Jong Un was supposed to arrive in Russia on Tuesday morning.
The President of North Korea was received by Putin, with whom he will meet.
