American Airlines Flight 1441 on Sept. 2 is involved in an investigation into the family of a 14-year-old girl who allegedly found an iPhone taped to the back of a toilet seat in an apparent attempt to secretly record it.
According to the charges, a crew member is believed to have been behind the event while the family was traveling from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Boston.
According to testimony, the minor was traveling in tourist class when she tried to use the restroom, but a crew member advised the girl to use the first class restroom because the one in her area was broken.
Just before she entered the bathroom, a man came in and then told her the seat was broken, but not to worry, and left. However, the girl noticed that an iPhone was barely noticeably glued to the back of the toilet seat, apparently in order to fix it, so she took a photo before leaving the bathroom.
“These events have shocked and deeply disturbed our daughter and the entire family,” the family said in a statement.
Paul Llewellyn, a lawyer representing the family, said they have not yet filed a lawsuit.
Law enforcement officers met the plane at the gate after landing. Massachusetts State Police escorted the crew member off the flight, and the FBI took over the investigation.
American Airlines said in a statement after the incident that airline officials “take this matter very seriously and are fully cooperating with authorities in their investigation as safety and security are our top priorities.”
