The Israeli military has begun pumping seawater into the Hamas tunnel complex in the Gaza Strip, US media reported on Wednesday, December 13.

Jewish authorities have informed the US administration that they have begun “rigorous testing on a limited basis” of flooding some of Gaza’s tunnels with seawater to test whether the tunnel network could be disrupted on a larger scale, a US official told CNN.

By data The Wall Street Journal, this process can last for several weeks. According to several interlocutors of the publication from among members of the administration of US President Joe Biden, flooding with sea water could help destroy Hamas infrastructure. At the same time, other officials expressed fears that Israel’s actions could jeopardize the Palestinian enclave’s supply of fresh water.

However, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) did not publicly comment on the situation.

Earlier, the Israeli military reported the discovery of an entrance to a tunnel belonging to the Palestinian Hamas movement in a classroom in a school in the Gaza Strip. The tunnel reportedly led to a mosque in the Shujaya area in central Gaza.
