Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, during a speech at the UN Security Council, warned that the risk of epidemics has sharply increased in the Gaza Strip. According to him, the sewerage system in the enclave has been destroyed, and a significant part of the farmland can no longer be restored.

“As a result of the bombing, the soil, groundwater, coastal sea waters, and atmosphere are already polluted to an unprecedented level with a thick layer of explosion and combustion products, destroyed equipment and ammunition, chemicals, decomposing biomass, no matter how creepy it may sound, household waste and sewage water.”said the head of Russian diplomacy.

Lavrov added that as a result of the fighting in the region, natural sources of drinking water have practically disappeared. In addition, the sewage infrastructure has been almost completely destroyed, and according to some estimates, up to 22% of Gaza’s agricultural land cannot be restored.

According to the head of the Foreign Ministry, “tens of thousands” of cases of diarrhea, acute respiratory diseases, scabies and skin rashes have already been recorded in the enclave. Against this background, the risk of epidemics has sharply increased in the enclave, the minister emphasized.
