US President Joe Biden has signed a document that gives his administration rights against Jewish settlers who have committed acts of violence in the Palestinian region of the West Bank. This was stated in a statement released by the White House reported National Security Advisor to the President of the United States Jake Sullivan.
Biden expressed concern about record levels of violence being shown by extremist settlers.
“This violence poses a mortal threat to the peace, security and stability of the West Bank, Israel and the entire Middle East, and threatens the national security and foreign policy interests of the United States“, the statement said.
The decree signed by the American president introduced a state of emergency, which allows the introduction of personal sanctions against individuals “undermining peace” in the West Bank.
In December 2023, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken promised that Washington would take action to curb settler violence against Palestinians.
