Argentine President Javier Miley said that he intends to cut 70 thousand civil servants in the near future, a local publication reported on March 27 Infobae.

They plan to fire officials mainly by not renewing expiring labor contracts, although direct dismissals are also expected. Previously, the Argentine leader had already laid off 50 thousand state employees.

“We have laid off 50 thousand government employees… and 70 thousand contracts will be cut”said Miley.

It is noted that on average each structure will lose from 15% to 20% of employees.

The massive cuts come as part of a set of economic reforms adopted at the end of December 2023.

Then the President of Argentina signed a decree introducing more than 300 reforms to liberalize the economy in all sectors. In his opinion, this will help get rid of the restrictions that hinder the development of the state’s economy and will give impetus to the growth of stability.

At the same time, part of the reforms is aimed at eliminating benefits and subsidies, although about 40% of the country’s population lives below the poverty line.

Earlier on March 10, Miley announced that he would cancel his own salary increase.
