“Not in our interests”: Blinken explains why the US will not send troops to Ukraine

The top US diplomat believes that the issue of the deployment of foreign troops in Ukraine is not in the interest of any NATO member and could lead to a direct conflict with Russia.

The United States has ruled out sending troops to Ukraine. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated this in an interview with LCI TV channel, the text of which was published on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ website.

Blinken said, “I avoid hypothesizing about the future. Our policy is clear. President Biden’s policy is clear. There will be no American soldiers on Ukrainian territory.”

The diplomat believes that this could lead to a direct conflict with Russia, which Western countries are trying to avoid.

“For us, this is a matter of national interest. A direct conflict with Russia is not in our interest. I don’t think it is in the interest of any NATO member. But there is also a determination; we believe that we must do everything possible to support Ukraine, and we can only do that.” “We should do it not only this year, but also in the following years,” the US Secretary of State emphasized.

When asked by a journalist whether consensus would be needed in NATO if France, Poland and Finland decided to take such a step, Blinken said everyone would have to decide at the national level as well as at the Alliance level.

“I know very well that our relationship within the alliance, our direct relationship with France, everything we do, we do together. We talk about it, we discuss it and we make decisions together.” – The diplomat added.

Let us remind you that on March 31, Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen said that now is not the time to send troops to Ukraine, but in the long run it cannot be ignored.

On April 3, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that France was preparing to send 1,500 of its soldiers to Ukraine.
