Security Council on Zaporizhia NPP: Grossi again did not condemn Ukraine for attacks on the plant

While our troops are hitting strongholds and strategically important targets, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are attacking residential areas and the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, which is why the nuclear security of all of Europe is at risk. However, even in such a situation, the head of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, speaking at the UN Security Council, limited himself to streamlined phrases. Although he confirmed that Russia did not deploy heavy equipment at the Zaporizhia NPP, he did not say who was attacking the station. As a result, our permanent representative almost had to point out the obvious with his finger. Pavel Matveev listened to all the statements.

The first word at the Security Council meeting was given to the IAEA Director General. Who, if not those responsible for the safety of peaceful atoms on the entire planet, should call a spade a spade?

“Back in May last year, I identified five principles of nuclear power plant safety, the first of which is that no attacks on the plant should be allowed. Over the past 10 days, it has been violated several times. This increases the risks of ensuring nuclear safety at the plant.”said Grossi.

Rafael Grossi called a spade a spade, but not everything. Without indicating the main thing. When he visited the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant a year ago, they openly asked him not to allow attacks on the plant, this is playing with fire.

But now the attacks were not only allowed, but they were even embarrassed to clarify – “who did it?” Which the Russian representative naturally drew attention to.

“We call on the leadership of the IAEA to recognize the obvious fact and not engage in verbal balancing act. The hesitation of the Agency Secretariat to call a spade a spade only encourages the Kyiv authorities to further irresponsible and extremely dangerous actions.”,” emphasized Russia’s permanent representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya.

Vasily Nebenzya reminded that the attack on Zaporizhia NPP was not isolated, and therefore not accidental. Rocket attacks in the summer and fall of 2022. Several sabotage attempts. Shelling of Energodar, where station employees live with their families. And now there are drone attacks on the 5th and 6th power units. According to the US representative, who went even further in the verbal balancing act than the IAEA Director General, Russia is to blame for the shelling of the nuclear power plant by Ukrainians.

“The conflict started by Russia and its continued control over the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant entail the risks of a nuclear incident. These risks are a direct result of Putin’s decision to continue hostilities in Ukraine. But the reality is that Russia does not care about these risks.”said US Deputy Ambassador to the UN Robert Wood.

The representative of Great Britain spoke in the same spirit – with the eternal “highly liked”, that if it were not for these terrible Russians, then nothing bad would have happened, but only good things would have happened. In contrast, the representative of China is the voice of reason in the midst of the anti-Russian bacchanalia.

“China urges both parties to maintain calm and restraint, adhere to the spirit of cooperation and humanity, and strictly abide by the nuclear safety convention.”,” said China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Geng Shuang.

The representative of Ukraine, who spoke after the Chinese, did not seem to hear him. He repeated the American’s speech almost word for word. The face of Vasily Nebenzi, who was forced to listen to all this, speaks for itself.

“Our Western colleagues, without noticing it themselves, spoke out today in the form of an ultimatum: “Transfer control over the Zaporizhzhya NPP, and then they will stop shelling it.” Thus, they not only betrayed the Zelensky regime, but also actually admitted to complicity in these irresponsible attacks “concluded Nebenzya.

A characteristic touch: at the end of the meeting, the floor was again given to the head of the IAEA so that he could “respond to the comments of the parties.” But he only assured: the IAEA will do everything possible to ensure the safety of the station. How exactly – he did not specify.
