Sri Lanka plans to join BRICS in the near future. This was announced on April 24 by the ambassador of the island state to Russia, Janita Abeywickrema Liyanage.

“Indeed, there is a desire to join BRICS+ in the near future, this will make it possible to ensure both transport and food security,” – the diplomat said during a conversation with reporters.

According to her, two Sri Lankan delegations are currently at the International Security Conference in St. Petersburg. They are headed by the First Deputy Minister of Defense and the Chairman of the Oversight Committee on International Security at the Parliament of Sri Lanka.

Colombia previously announced its interest in joining BRICS as a full member. Vietnam is also considering joining the association.

On January 19, the press secretary of the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov, reported that there was a large queue of people wishing to cooperate with BRICS.

On March 5, Russian Presidential Assistant Yuri Ushakov noted that new applications continue to be received to join BRICS, but at the moment it is too early to talk about the “second wave” of expansion.

On March 13, Deputy Head of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Sherpa of the Russian Federation in BRICS, Sergei Ryabkov, said that discussion of the issue of further expansion of BRICS should be postponed until the organization’s summit in Kazan.
