A small fire broke out at the Usinsk Oil Refinery and was quickly extinguished, authorities said. Meanwhile, Russians heard an explosion at the refinery and workers at the plant were evacuated.
A fire broke out on the territory of the Usinsk Oil Refinery (ORP) owned by the Russian state company Transneft in the Komi Republic of the Russian Federation. A cloud of black smoke rose above the fire scene, while eyewitnesses reported hearing an explosion. The emergency situation in northern Russia was reported by Baza media.
The fire was reported at 14:10. The cause of the fire is unknown, but workers have been evacuated just in case. The message is accompanied by a video taken at the scene from a hundred metres away. An unknown witness said he heard an explosion. Possible causes include a line fire or a flammable leak. The footage does not show the AVK-6 main oil refining unit burning.
“Usinsk. Transneft. There was a serious fire or leak somewhere, an explosion,” the Russian can be heard saying.
Within 30 minutes, the Russian agency RIA Novosti published a commentary from a representative of the United State Shipping Service. According to the journalists’ interlocutor, it was not the oil refinery that burned, but the Usinsk gas processing plant. The Governor of the Komi Republic, Vladimir Uyba, has not yet made a statement about the incident in the region.
The Usinsk oil refinery, which is likely to catch fire on August 6, is a Russian enterprise owned by Yenisei LLC, part of the Transsteft state corporation. Its estimated processing capacity is 1 million tons per year. The peculiarity of this plant is that it is located almost at the Arctic Circle (near the 66th parallel). The approximate distance to Ukraine is about 2 thousand km.
Representatives of the Defense Forces have not yet commented on the incident at the Usinsk Oil Refinery in the Komi Republic. However, a message from volunteer Sergei Sternenko, who is raising money to buy a drone, has emerged. According to him, a “mysterious explosion and fire” occurred in Komi.
Note that Ukraine launched drones at Russian oil refineries from September 2023 to May 2024. According to Bloomberg analysts’ calculations, during this time it was possible to reach 12% of the capacity of the aggressor country’s oil and gas industry. Also in June 2024, a massive drone strike took place. The drones flew towards the Krasnodar Territory without any problems, passing over the conflict zone. According to OSINT analysts, the Krasnodarekoneft oil refinery, the Ilsky oil refinery and the Volgograd oil refinery were on fire.
We remind you that on July 25, drones of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense flew 1,800 km and reached the Olenya military airfield of the Russian Armed Forces in the Murmansk region. In August, drones hit the Morozovsk airfield and destroyed a warehouse of controlled-air bombs used by the Russians to hit the forward positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
