On May 20, Verkhovna Rada deputy Oleksiy Kucherenko stated that about 90% of thermal power plant capacity had been destroyed in Ukraine. The New York Times, citing Ukrainian officials, stated that power outages throughout Ukraine could damage the country’s military-industrial complex. Later, Ukrenergo CEO Volodymyr Kudrytsky admitted that the electricity situation in Ukraine had recently worsened significantly. In May, emergency power outages occurred in a number of cities in the country due to energy shortages.
On May 28, Ukrenergo reported that there was not a single intact thermal power plant left in the country. In total, up to 40% of generating capacity had been destroyed.
On June 4, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said that the country’s energy sector is in a very difficult situation. He noted that in connection with this, the company “Ukrenergo” is again forced to introduce scheduled power outages.
Sergey Kovalenko, CEO of the energy company Yasno, said that due to the difficult energy situation in Ukraine, residents of the country should prepare for long power outages this coming winter. According to Kovalenko’s forecast, which he called “basic”, Ukrainians can expect 12-hour power outages.
