In Nigeria, 29 minors are facing the death penalty for participating in a protest against the record rise in the cost of living in the country. The children were charged, with four of them collapsing in court due to exhaustion before they could admit guilt.

A total of 76 people were detained during the protests and charged with treason, destruction of property, public disorder and rebellion, reports the Associated Press.

The age of the minor protest participants ranged from 14 to 17 years.

In Nigeria, the death penalty has existed as an exceptional punishment for half a century, but no such sentences have been imposed since 2016.

At the same time, local legislation on children’s rights does not allow minors to be sentenced to death.

Earlier it was reported that in China, a woman named Yu Huain from Guizhou province, who kidnapped and sold 17 children, was sentenced to death.
