According to Dmitry Peskov, Russian authorities are not obliged to make an official statement about granting asylum to Bashar Assad in Russia.
The decision to grant Syrian President Bashar Assad and his family asylum in Russia was made by Vladimir Putin himself. According to Meduza, Russian President Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov stated this in a briefing.
Peskov emphasized that it was “absolutely not necessary” for the Kremlin to make an official statement granting Assad asylum in Russia.
“We don’t have to do this,” Peskov said.
He also added that he had nothing to say to journalists about Assad’s whereabouts for now, and that Assad’s meeting with Putin was not included in the official program.
At the same time, Russian propaganda publication TASS reported that the Syrian Embassy in the Russian Federation also confirmed that Bashar Assad was in Moscow.
Referring to the situation in Syria as a whole, Peskov said that what happened there “surprised the whole world” and that the Kremlin was “no exception in this situation.”
According to Putin’s press secretary, Syria faces “a very difficult period due to instability”, but the Kremlin will continue dialogue with all regional countries “on Syrian issues”.
Let us remind you that on December 8, a photo of Bashar Assad and his wife, probably taken in the Russian Federation, was published on the Internet.
On the same day, the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Moscow Region revealed why Bashar Assad’s Il-76 plane disappeared from radar.
