Following the overthrow of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched Operation Bashan’s Arrow, whose goal was a demilitarized zone and the destruction of Syria’s strategic weapons. During the operation, a series of attacks were carried out on military bases and five fighter jet squadrons and 90% of the missile stockpile were destroyed. In the video with the hit footage, you can see how ammunition depots explode in different colors, how planes and helicopters, radars, air defense systems and the like explode. The results of Operation Bashan’s Arrow on December 12 were reported on the Israeli command portal.
The IDF portal states that the aim of the attacks on military bases in Syria is to prevent the weapons from falling into the hands of forces that may be hostile to Israel. Among others, the planes attacked the T4 airfield (parking lot for two Su-22 and Su-34 squadrons), Bly airfield (three fighter squadrons) near the capital Damascus. In one of the videos published by the Israelis, we see that a military plane was blown up by a rocket in its location.
The IDF wrote that it was possible to destroy 90% of Syria’s surface-to-air missile stockpile. There are also images of a warehouse where surface-to-surface missiles were stored being hit, and helicopters and air defense equipment being blown up.
In the statement made by the command, “The Syrian Air Force was one of the strongest air forces in the Middle East. The attacks against them are an important success for the Air Force’s dominance in the region.” The statement was included.
The Israelis listed the weapons neutralized in Operation Bashan Arrow as follows:
- fighter jets and helicopters;
- Scud missiles – range up to 300 km, weight 5-8 tons, diameter – 88 cm, length – 11 m,
- UAV;
- missile arsenal – cruise missiles, coastal missiles, surface-to-air missiles, land missiles, surface missiles;
- radars.
The Israelis also attacked large industrial warehouses in the Homs region. This is where the Scud missile production facility is located: The IDF wrote that the facility “is considered one of the most important infrastructures of the Syrian manufacturing industry.” A map showing former Syrian leader Bashar Assad’s military facilities and images of the targets hit was also published on the portal.
The war in Syria and Israel’s actions
Note that in late November and early December 2024, Syrian rebels attacked the positions of Assad’s army and within a week took control of the territory previously held by Bashar Assad. While Assad fled to Moscow, opposition representatives toured the prisons where Syrians were held and tortured. The Suspilne publication wrote that during the 13 years of his rule, almost 200 thousand citizens were arrested.
Israel then began attacking military targets in Syria to create a demilitarized zone in the northeast of the country, along the Syrian border and in the Golan Heights. On December 10, Defense Minister Kots announced that the entire Assad fleet had been neutralized. Footage of the attacks shows the ships blowing up after being hit by Israeli missiles.
