While customs clearance was free, Ukrainians imported the most used cars in May and June. Volkswagen models were in greatest demand.
In 2022, 404,800 used cars were imported to Ukraine. That’s 24.2% less than a year ago, but still quite a lot by wartime standards. The structure of used car imports was explained at the Car Market Research Institute.
In the spring, the used car market collapsed, as their registration was temporarily suspended after the start of a full-scale Russian invasion. But this was followed by a sharp increase in imports – more than 80 thousand cars were imported after the introduction of free customs clearance in May and June. After that, import volumes decreased again and now amounted to 15-16 thousand cars per month.
Compared to 2021, it is noteworthy that there is a significant increase in imports in some regions. Thus, 51.1% more cars were imported in the Volyn region, 23.3% in the Lviv region and 17.5% in the Rivne region. The greatest decrease was recorded in the regions of Donetsk (-86.3%), Kherson (-80.9%) and Kharkiv (-68.6%), where the most active conflicts took place in 2022.
As before, Volkswagen was most in demand in the secondary market – this brand is in a leading position by a wide margin. In addition, Renault and Ford were actively imported.
