The Toyota AE86 was an incredibly popular car in Japan in the ’80s. Car enthusiasts chose this model for its low cost and excellent handling.
The AE86 Levin concept with green EV stickers is powered by a Prius plug-in hybrid battery and a Tundra HEV electric motor. Inside, you can even find a gear knob, which is not often seen in electric vehicles. Toyota noted that the electric version of the hatchback still handles well.
The second concept AE86 Trueno with a 4A-GE twin cam engine was supported by hydrogen technology. Two Toyota Mirai hydrogen storage tanks were installed in the car. They are hidden in the trunk.
The hydrogen-powered AE86 Trueno was developed in conjunction with Toyota’s Gazoo Racing division. By complementing it with modern technology, the engineers helped preserve many of the original’s distinctive features.
Toyota emphasized that the concepts are a demonstration of what cutting-edge designs can deliver. The cars are not planned to go into mass production.
