BMW i3: a great German brand and an automotive classic

In 2013, the BMW i3, the brand’s first electric car, broke into the electric car market before it was as booming as it is today. After more than 250,000 units sold and nine years in the arena, the prototype is being phased out.

While no specific replacement has been announced, the range is expected to be succeeded by the ix1, an all-electric version of the BMW X1, coming right after the ix3, the next-generation electrified MINI Cooper model.

The BMW i3 has influenced the automotive industry with its compact design, comfortable interior space, and modern and innovative design with good finishes in avant-garde materials.

In addition, a high natural and processing component is presented in the car. For example, its carbon fiber chassis made it a very light car despite the battery ballast, with amazing performance for a car of this spec.

The first update of the i3 was made in 2016 with an increased battery capacity, which increased the range from 190 to 312 kilometers. In 2017, without changing the battery capacity, BMW released the BMW i3s with a 10kW larger engine, a range of 280 kilometers and some sportier performance features.

The future of BMW

For BMW executives, the release of the car did not affect the offer or preferences of its users. A senior UK executive told Autocar that customers looking for an all-electric city car ideal for city driving or a compact but spacious car for an active lifestyle would be ideally suited to a Mini Electric or BMW iX1.

In addition, the firm said it will have 13 electric models in circulation by 2023. In this sense, and also after saying goodbye to the i3, the BMW plant in Leipzig has reformulated its activities and prepared to reorganize its facilities for the production of the third generation Mini Countryman.

The said model is based on the BMW FAAR platform, a new architecture that also marks the end of production of the aluminum-intensive DriveLife platform that underpins the i3.
