Nissan launches its electric technology into space with JAXA

A strategic alliance between the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and Nissan has been launched to develop a new lunar rover that will feature the electrical technologies found in the Leaf and Ariya models, with the intention of ensuring optimal performance once it has completed its mission. functions.

To do this, the vehicle manufacturer has been working since 2020 to drive a prototype lunar rover, introducing electrified vehicle technology so that they can operate on difficult terrain such as sand, rocks, small mountains and any other uneven terrain, providing a significant amount of power.

In addition, the e-4ORCE drive fitted to the Nissan Ariya will also say “present” to control all of its wheels, allowing every aspect of the rover to be used at 100% at all times. What stands out about this system is the ability to independently steer the wheels, allowing for greater off-road capability on space surfaces.

The lunar rover, developed by JAXA and Nissan, is provided by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).

“The use of cars and traffic situations are very diverse. Our goal is to achieve maximum driving efficiency through research and development. We believe the insights from this joint study with JAXA will drive vehicle innovation that will benefit customers,” said Toshiyuki Nakajima, General Manager of Vehicle Advanced Development, responsible for the development of the e-4ORCE control system. at Nissan.

Now, to navigate sandy terrain, Nissan has modified the e-4ORCE’s traction with traction control, which judges the terrain it will travel over, reducing the rotation of each wheel and making adjustments to keep the lunar vehicle from stagnating on the surface.

On the other hand, Ikko Funaki, director of JAXA’s Space Science Innovation Center, says they hope to use the knowledge gained from partnering with brands including Nissan to develop their lunar prototypes.

“JAXA is committed to applying research findings to future space exploration. By conducting research with Nissan, which has experience in electrified technology, we hope to apply our findings to the development of more efficient lunar rovers,” said Funaki.
